SIM lock:

A SIMLOCK, network lock, CARRIER LOCK, IMEI LOCK or (Master) SUBSIDY lock is actually a technical restriction built into GSM and CDMA mobile phones by manufacturers to be used by service providers to restrict the usage of these phones to particular locations and/or networks. This is in comparison with a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) which doesn't enforce any SIM constraints.SIM locking is very common if subsidized handsets are offered with pre-paid contracts. It is really important to note, however, that this technology accompanying with the cell phone must be compatible with the technology used by the network carrier. A GSM mobile can only operate with a GSM carrier and will never work on a CDMA network. Likewise, a CDMA phone is only going to work with a CDMA network and is not going to work on a GSM network. Be aware that more modern (2013 onwards) pricier cell phones are capable of supporting both CDMA and GSM technologies, permitting users to use their smartphones on nearly every network.

Unlocking Technology:

A mobile can be unlocked by entering a code provided by the service operator. Different mechanisms contain software running on the handset or a computer or laptop connected to the device, hardware devices that connect to the phone or over-the-air by the carrier. More often than not the unlock process is permanent. The code needed to eliminate all locks from a cellphone is referred to as the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. Generally if the device is network locked it will typically display one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

Most of the time a SIM-locked mobile is marketed at a considerably cheaper cost than an unlocked one on the grounds that the company is expecting income through its service. SIM locks are employed on more affordable (pay-as-you-go) mobile phones, while special discounts on more expensive handsets demand a subscription that delivers guaranteed income. Unlocked devices have a much higher market value.

Unlocking Services:

A number of businesses offer a carrier phone unlocking service . This service requires all those whom wish to unlock a mobile phone handset to supply their IMEI number to a unlocking company and often they will also need the country and network the handset is locked to, either sent through email or entered on their web site. The organization then will provide (once you have paid) an unlock code for the mobile.
